Pergola sizes

The right pergola size comes down to two things: the space you have, and what you want to do under it. Sunnier louvred pergolas come in 12 sizes across two models, from a 3 × 3 m Essential to a 4 × 6 m Classic. This guide shows every size, its price, its footprint and how to choose.

3 × 3 m pergola

Our smallest size, and the entry point to the range. The 3 × 3 m Pergola Essential has a hand crank louvre roof, needs no electrician for the roof and has the highest snow load rating in the Essential range, at 120 kg/m². It suits a patio by the back door, a corner of the garden or a space for a small table and chairs. From £6,459.

3 × 4 m and 4 × 3 m pergolas

A 3 × 4 m pergola and a 4 × 3 m pergola are the same thing: 3 m one way and 4 m the other. It's one of two sizes, with 3 × 5 m, that you can have in either model. Choose the 3 × 4 m Essential (£6,833) for a manual roof, or the 3 × 4 m Classic (£7,550) for an electric roof, a remote and a snow load rating of 320 kg/m². Optional perimeter LED lighting around the frame is available on both models.

Set-out guide for a freestanding 3 × 4 m Classic: 3,100 × 4,025 mm across the outside of the posts, and 3,153 × 4,078 mm from base plate to base plate.

4 × 4 m pergola

The 4 × 4 m Pergola Classic gives you a square footprint, with the same space in both directions. Across the outside of the posts it measures 4,025 × 4,025 mm, and 4,078 × 4,078 mm from base plate to base plate. From £8,849, with a snow load rating of 160 kg/m².

Larger sizes: 3 × 5 m up to 4 × 6 m

For longer spaces, Classic comes in 5 m and 6 m lengths in 3 m, 3.5 m and 4 m widths, and Essential comes in 3 × 5 m. A freestanding 3 × 5 m Classic measures 3,100 × 5,045 mm across the outside of the posts, and a 4 × 5 m measures 4,025 × 5,045 mm. The biggest is the 4 × 6 m Classic, from £11,899. See our guide to large pergolas for more on the biggest sizes.

Freestanding or wall-mounted

Every size can be freestanding or fixed to a wall, at the same price. A freestanding pergola can go anywhere on a suitable base, from the end of the garden to the middle of a patio. A wall-mounted pergola fixes to the back of the house. On a wall-mounted Essential the louvres run parallel to the wall. Read our guide to wall-mounted pergolas.

Height

Both models have a standard height of 2,350 mm to the underside of the beam. The beam itself is 150 mm deep. On Classic you can choose a custom height from 2,100 to 2,800 mm, for £250. That can help under a low first-floor window, or where you want more headroom. If planning rules are a concern, read our planning permission guide.

How to choose your size

  1. Measure the space. Mark out the footprint on the ground with string or tape, using the post measurements above. Check paths, doors, drains and steps.
  2. Picture what goes underneath. Set out the table, chairs or sofa you plan to use, and leave room to walk around them and pull chairs out.
  3. Look up. Check for windows, gutters, trees and overhead cables.
  4. Think about the base. Each post needs a suitable fixing on concrete, stone, timber decking or prepared foundations. Where point foundations are used, the recommended size is 600 × 600 × 800 mm.
  5. Talk it through. Send us your measurements or a photo, or book a free consultation.
