Care & Maintenance Guide

Practical guidance for lasting performance, appearance and enjoyment of Sunnier pergolas and supplied accessories.

Important: This guide supports safe use and routine ownership. Product-specific installation manuals, technical limits and electrical instructions take priority where they contain more detailed requirements.

Looking after your Sunnier pergola

Sunnier pergolas are engineered for outdoor living. Regular, straightforward care helps preserve their appearance, drainage performance and smooth operation over the years.

This guide explains the routine tasks most owners can complete safely. It also identifies when to pause, avoid intervention and contact Sunnier or a suitably qualified professional.

The simple rule: keep the structure clean, keep drainage routes clear, operate moving parts regularly and respond sensibly to local weather conditions.

Safety first

  • Disconnect or isolate electrical power before cleaning near motors, lighting, receivers or wiring.
  • Do not climb on the pergola roof or use louvres, beams or gutters as access platforms.
  • Use stable access equipment suitable for the task and location.
  • Do not place hands, tools or objects within moving mechanisms while the roof, screens or blinds are operating.
  • Do not dismantle structural, motorised or electrical components unless instructed by Sunnier or a competent professional.
  • Stop using any component that appears damaged, loose, unsafe or electrically compromised and contact support.

Routine care schedule

  • Monthly — visual check of roof, screens, drainage outlets and visible fixings. Remove obvious leaves and debris. This catches small issues before they affect operation or drainage.
  • Every 3–6 months — wash aluminium surfaces and clear channels thoroughly to protect the finish and water-management system.
  • Annually — complete a fuller inspection, test controls and lubricate only where specified.
  • After severe weather — inspect for debris, impact, displacement or unusual operation before normal use.
  • Coastal or polluted locations — increase fresh-water cleaning frequency as conditions require to reduce salt and contaminant build-up.

Cleaning aluminium and powder-coated surfaces

Use clean water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and a soft cloth, sponge or soft-bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow the surface to dry naturally.

Clean from the top down so loosened dirt is carried away rather than redistributed across finished surfaces.

  • Remove bird deposits, tree sap, salt and chemical splashes promptly.
  • Test any unfamiliar cleaning product on a discreet area first.
  • Use separate clean cloths for heavily contaminated sections.
  • Avoid allowing detergent to dry on the surface.

Products and methods to avoid

  • Abrasive pads, wire brushes, scouring powders or sharp scrapers
  • Strong solvents, bleach, acidic or highly alkaline cleaners
  • Cleaning products containing unknown polishing or cutting compounds
  • Pressure washing at close range or directly into seals, joints, motors, controls or electrical housings
  • Steam cleaning or very hot water on coated or sealed components

Coastal care

In coastal or salt-laden environments, rinse exposed surfaces with fresh water more frequently. Salt can accumulate invisibly and should not be left to build up around joints, fixings or drainage routes.

Roof, gutters and drainage

The roof and integrated channels are designed to guide rainfall towards designated outlets. Their performance depends on those routes remaining clear and unobstructed.

  • Open or position the louvres as instructed to access visible channels safely.
  • Remove leaves, blossom, seeds, moss, insects and other debris by hand or with a soft brush.
  • Flush channels gently with clean water and confirm that outlets discharge freely.
  • Check that nearby plants do not shed material directly into drainage routes or restrict moving parts.
  • Inspect again after autumn leaf fall, storms or nearby gardening work.

Do not force blockages. Do not push rigid rods, metal tools or high-pressure water into concealed drainage routes. Contact Sunnier if an obstruction cannot be cleared using gentle, accessible methods.

Rainfall, moisture and condensation

A Sunnier pergola remains an outdoor structure and naturally interacts with changing rainfall, wind, humidity and temperature.

Condensation can form when moist air meets a cooler aluminium surface. It may gather into droplets and can sometimes be mistaken for rain entering the roof.

When moisture appears

  • Check whether drainage channels and outlets are clear.
  • Confirm the roof is in the correct closed position for rainfall management.
  • Observe whether the moisture appears during wind-driven rain, after a rapid temperature change or in humid conditions.
  • Check for splashback from paving, walls, furniture or surrounding surfaces.
  • Record photographs or video if the same issue recurs.

Do not leave papers, untreated fabrics, electrical equipment or valuables beneath the pergola without suitable additional protection where they must remain completely dry.

Operating louvres and moving components

  • Check that the movement path is clear before operating the roof.
  • Do not operate louvres that are obstructed by ice, compacted snow, branches or foreign objects.
  • Use the controls normally and avoid repeated rapid reversing unless the product instructions permit it.
  • Operate moving components periodically during long dry or unused periods.
  • Stop operation if movement becomes uneven, unusually noisy or restricted.
  • Lubricate only the points and with the products specifically identified in the product instructions.

Light clicks, creaks or changes in sound can occur as aluminium warms, cools or moves through its operating cycle. These can be normal. Grinding, repeated impact, visible distortion or a sudden material change in operation should be reported.

Motors, remotes and controls

  • Keep remotes dry and replace batteries with the specified type.
  • Check the local power supply before assuming the motor or controller has failed.
  • Follow the approved reset or pairing procedure only.
  • Do not open sealed control housings or alter wiring.
  • Keep router, app and smart-home details up to date where connected features are used.
  • Arrange fixed electrical work through a suitably qualified person.

Before contacting support, note any indicator lights, unusual sounds, partial movement or error behaviour. A short video often allows the support team to identify the next step quickly.

Screens, blinds and fabric elements

  • Retract screens and blinds when local wind conditions require or when the product instructions direct.
  • Do not treat screens as structural storm barriers.
  • Keep tracks clear of grit, leaves and small stones.
  • Clean fabric gently using the approved method for the supplied material.
  • Do not roll away fabric while heavily soiled or wet unless the instructions expressly permit it.
  • Keep heaters, barbecues and open flames a safe distance from fabrics and tracks.

Lighting and heaters

  • Clean only when isolated, cool and dry.
  • Do not spray water directly into fittings or electrical connections.
  • Keep heaters clear of fabrics, plants, decorations and stored items.
  • Follow the manufacturer instructions supplied with each powered accessory.
  • Arrange inspection if a fitting flickers, overheats, trips the supply or shows water ingress.

Seasonal guidance

Spring

  • Clear winter debris and flush drainage routes.
  • Test roof movement, screens, lighting and controls.
  • Wash coated surfaces and inspect visible fixings and seals.

Summer

  • Remove sap, pollen and bird deposits promptly.
  • Keep moving tracks clear during periods of heavy use.
  • Avoid leaving sensitive items beneath the pergola during sudden summer storms.

Autumn

  • Increase checks where leaves, seeds and blossom collect.
  • Clear drainage before forecast heavy rain.
  • Trim planting that reaches moving components or roof channels.

Winter

  • Do not operate components frozen in place.
  • Follow product-specific snow and ice guidance.
  • Remove accumulations only using a safe method that does not load, scratch or distort the structure.
  • Inspect after severe wind, ice or impact before returning to normal operation.

High wind, snow and severe weather

Product limits vary by model, size, configuration and fixing method. Always follow the technical schedule and operating instructions supplied with your pergola.

  • Retract screens and blinds before conditions exceed their operating guidance.
  • Do not rely solely on automated sensors; respond to actual conditions at the property.
  • Do not add temporary covers, hanging loads or panels that increase wind exposure.
  • Do not allow snow or ice to accumulate beyond the stated product limits.
  • After exceptional weather, check the structure before operating moving components.

Natural engineering characteristics

Aluminium outdoor structures respond to their environment. The following may occur within normal design and manufacturing tolerances without affecting safe operation or intended performance:

  • Thermal expansion and contraction as temperatures change
  • Occasional clicks, creaks or minor movement
  • Small visual differences at joints or between production batches
  • Gradual changes in gloss or colour through outdoor exposure
  • Condensation during humid or rapidly changing conditions
  • Periodic adjustment of moving or connected components

A condition should still be reported where it materially affects safety, quality, appearance or intended operation, or appears to fall outside the applicable technical tolerance.

Routine inspection checklist

  • Structure — posts and beams appear secure, aligned and free from impact damage.
  • Roof — louvres move freely and close in their intended position.
  • Drainage — channels and outlets are clear and discharge normally.
  • Fixings — visible fixings are present and show no obvious loosening or corrosion.
  • Seals — visible seals and brushes remain seated and reasonably intact.
  • Electrical — cables, lights, motors and controls show no visible damage or overheating.
  • Screens — tracks are clear and fabric moves without obstruction.
  • Surroundings — plants, furniture and stored items do not obstruct operation or drainage.

If anything looks wrong: clean, monitor or contact Sunnier as appropriate.

Troubleshooting guide

  • Water appears beneath the roof — check roof position, blocked channels, wind direction, condensation and splashback. Clean accessible drainage and record recurring behaviour.
  • Louvres will not move — check power supply, visible obstruction, ice and control batteries. Do not force the mechanism; contact support if unresolved.
  • Remote does not respond — check battery, pairing and local power, then follow the approved reset guide.
  • Unusual noise — check for debris or obstruction and whether the sound changes with temperature. Stop operation if grinding, impact or restriction is present.
  • Lighting flickers or trips — check power supply and any visible moisture or damage. Isolate and arrange qualified inspection.
  • Screen moves unevenly — check tracks, debris, wind and fabric alignment. Retract safely and contact support if movement remains uneven.

When to contact Sunnier

  • A structural component appears cracked, distorted, loose or displaced.
  • A motor or mechanism grinds, jams or operates unevenly after basic safe checks.
  • Electrical components show heat damage, repeated tripping or suspected water entry.
  • Recurring moisture appears despite clear drainage and correct operation.
  • A finish shows significant peeling, blistering or loss of adhesion.
  • A screen, blind or accessory appears unsafe to operate.
  • You are unsure whether a task can be completed safely.

Support and warranty claims

When contacting Sunnier, provide your order number, product model, installation address, a clear description of the issue and photographs or video where helpful.

Routine maintenance does not replace warranty rights. Equally, maintenance-related matters can often be resolved quickly without a formal claim. Sunnier will help identify the appropriate route.

The warranty policy and the version supplied with your order set out component periods, claim requirements and available remedies. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
